March 2016 Minutes

 

The  March 2016 meeting of the North Dallas R/C Club was called to order by Greg Pulcini on March 17th, 2016 At Valley View Christian Church.  

Previous month’s minutes were approved as posted on the website.  

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – Former member Roy Appleton.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT-  Greg Pulcini.  Reported that insurance certificate has arrived.  

SECRETARY – Patrick McNamera.  Absent.  Bruce Lakatos had nothing to report. 

VICE PRESIDENT – Dave Schaefer.  Dave asked that people please not leave items at the field.  Dave reported on the current FAA issues.  He also reported that we are having email issues with those members who have AOL email accounts.  

TREASURER/MEMBERSHIP – Dave Cotton.  Dave gave a report of the financial status of the club.  A motion to accept treasurer's report passed.    

SAFETY- Dave Schaefer- No safety issues.  Dave did stress the importance of checking the connections of Spektrum satelite antennas.

FIELD –  Bob Edler-Murphy.  Field looks good and has been recently mowed.  We are looking into selling the Lesco mower.  We are also researching the purchase of a new mower.

SOUND-  Billy Slater. No issues.  All Quiet.

TRAINING – Josh Kleen- We have a couple people currently in training..  

WEBMASTER –  Ken Sienksi.  Absent.  No report.

FACEBOOK- Josh Kleen.  All going well.   

CD REPORTS –  The Aero-tow Event was a success.  Richardson RC is having their 50th Anniversary banquet.  The Warbird event scheduled for June 10-11 is in need of volunteers.  Scouts day is tentatively scheduled for April 9th.  Benbrook has a small warbird event on May 14th.  Wings Over Windsong is also in the works.  Our next float fly is April 30th.  National Model Aviation Day will be August 13th.  Indoor flying is still ongoing.

OLD BUSINESS-  None.

NEW BUSINESS - We are currently shopping for a new mower.  We are looking for a new place to have indoor flying.

SHOW and TELL – Josh Kleen demonstrated his new electronic balancing device.  Billy Slater showed his ornithopter.

RAFFLE-  Jaques Parker conducted the monthly raffle.  The quarterly prize, a glider, was won by Jaques Parker.

February 2016 Minutes

 

The February meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on Feb 18, 2016 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Greg Pulcini called the meeting to order at 7:01PM.

There were no new members or guests attending the meeting.

A motion was made, and seconded, to approve the January meeting minutes as published.  Approval passed by unanimous voice vote.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT -- Greg Pulcini:  The club has received it’s AMA charter.  Expect to receive insurance certifications from the AMA in March.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT -- Dave Schaefer:  Dave gave a quick review of upcoming events, noting that Wings Over Windsong will be held the weekend before Warbirds Over Texas this year.  Dave have an update on the FAA, including an update on House Bill 4441 and special rule for model aircraft.  He noted that tomorrow (Feb 19th) was the deadline for registering with the FAA as a model aircraft pilot.

SECRETARY’S REPORT -- Patrick McNamara:  Nothing to report.

TREASURER’S REPORT -- Dave Cotton:  Dave was out of town.  Greg reviewed the financial report which was displayed on the projector for attendees to view.  Greg noted a delayed debit carrying over from the club’s 2015 lease payment.  A motion was made, and seconded, to approve the financial report as presented.Motion passed by unanimous voice vote.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT -- Bruce Lakatos:  158 current members.

FIELD REPORT -- Bob Edlet-Murphy:  Many small tasks have been accomplished.  Pile of dirt is gone --more holes have been filled.  New letters up on the front of the shelter.  Fixed garage door.  Josh Kleen noted the need for spell checking -- see lites.

Charles noted the need for gravel on road leading to field.  Estimate 4-5 loads of gravel.  Approx $1500.  Motion was made, and seconded, to approve funding for gravel.  Motion passed by unanimous voice vote.

Discussion regarding replacing the mower:  a group will present options at the March meeting.  A motion was made, and seconded, to approve up to $5000 for purchase of a new mower.  Motion passed by unanimous voice vote.

SAFETY REPORT -- Dave Schafer:  No safety issues.

RAFFLE -- Jacque Parker:  16 items presented for the evening raffle.

CD REPORTS and EVENTS:  Wings Over Windsong scheduled for the week before Warbirds Over Texas.  Club discussed providing volunteers again this year.  Commitment is minimal, 5-10 voluteers.  Josh Kleen is representing NDRCC with event planning.

Other area events were discussed. 

Indoor flying is set up through end of May, 2016.  After that, the church gym will no longer be available.  Josh to start looking for a new site.

Discussion was held about what to do for Apr 9th Spring Youth Day.  Bob will check with Scouts.

NEW BUSINESS:  Noted that Bill Paerrad (sp?), an active member from years past, had turned 90 and is now in hospice.

OLD BUSINESS:  No old business. Business portion of meeting closed at 7:34PM

SHOW and TELL:  Charles show the tail feathers of his Fokker project.  More than 800 sq in in tail surface area.

January 2016 Minutes

 

The January meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on January 21, 2016 at Valley View Christian Church. Club President Greg Pulcini called the meeting to order at 7:02pm

The minutes for the December meeting were presented to the membership.  Motion was made to accept the minutes with correction of the date for the December meeting.  Motion was seconded and December minutes we approved.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Greg Pulcini:  Nothing to report.  Greg gave a welcome and introductory words for 2016.

VICE PRESIDENT – Dave Schaefer:  Nothing to report

SECRETARY – Patrick McNamara: Nothing to report.  Greg noted that the AMA has not yet mailed out our club charter packet.  Expected to receive by end of January.

TREASURER – Dave Cotton: Presented summary of current accounts.  Dave described plan to move the existing money market account to an online bank account in order to receive some amount of interest on the club savings.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos: Reported on membership status.  3 new members in January.  Current membership sits at 155

FIELD – Bob Edlet-Murphy (absent):  No report.  Greg noted that the focus for field maintenance will be on the runway in order to be prepped for Spring events and especially WBOT 2016.

SAFETY – Dave Schafer: Noted a few incidents of armed or running planes facing down the runway while aircraft recover in progress in the same direction.  Dave reminder the membership  to remain in positive cotrol of their aircraft and to be aware of the location of people.

SOUND – Billy Slater: No sound issues

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski (absent):  None

TRAINING – Josh Kleen: Nothing to report

RAFFLE – Jacque Parker: Jacque present the normal, wide selection of raffle prizes.  He also presented the quarterly prize for the first quarter:  Radian BNF glider.

CD REPORTS – No new  reports.  Indoor flying continues to be the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.  Upcoming events:  March Aerotow, April Float Fly, Spring Youth Day

Warbids Over Texas:  Estimated to need 30 volunteers for two days in June.

OLD BUSINESS – None to cover

NEW BUSINESS:

Heli pad: A member commented that the club was not particularly heli friendly.  It was proposed that the club build a 5'x5' concrete heli pad at the north end of the field for helicopters to land a take off front.Flight would be to the west, away from the runway.  Bruce estimated cost at less that $200. A motion was made to authorize up to $200 to build the heli pad.  Motion was seconded and passed by show of hands with no opposing votes.

FAA issue: Dave Schaefer discussed the current state of FAA registration requirements for model aircraft pilots.  Dave made a general recommendation to the attendees to take a “wait and see” approach to registration.  The club will not be policing registration.  There was much general discussion by the attendees regarding the FAA rules.  The board will forward out any information and/or guidance received from the AMA to the club membership before the registration deadline of Feb 19th. Dave also noted the existing AMA requirement to have your AMA number and contact information on all aircraft.  A contact information template was passed around for review.  The template will be posted on the club website for use by club members.

SHOW AND TELL –Josh Kleen presented his Hangar 9, 60cc Corsair with a Saito FG-84, thee cylinder raidial. Billy Slater presented the tail feathers of his scratch built PT-19 project.  Building from Hostetler plans and a kit cut by Precision Cut Kits.

PROGRAM – Computer Radio Programming, presented by Josh Kleen.

December 2015 Minutes

 

The December meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on December 17, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:02pm

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – Thanks for the good times and for all of your support.

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – Thanks for all of the support.  We also presented our annual Christmas gifts to the landlords and they are very appreciative.

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – Nothing to report

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – Presented current financial status of the club.  Members present approved.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos – Reported on membership status.  The recent rule change by the AMA that transitions membership expiration dates to be 12 months instead of December 31 has required us to enact a rule that requires all members to visibly wear their membership cards while at the field.  This rule will take effect January 1.  We will be providing all members with plastic sleeves and clips when they renew for this purpose.

SAFETY – Dave Schafer – If you have a crash and damage the fence, please let someone on the board know.  We need to keep it up and running to keep the animals out.  Also, if you have a post crash fire, let everyone know.  In the event of a fire, please land if you are flying.  We also ask members to help fight the fire and remember to call 911 quickly if they will be needed.  We are investing in additional fire extinguishers to help deal with fire situations if they occur.

Indoor Flying – Indoor flying continues to be fun.  Turnout is down a bit though so if you are interested in continuing to enjoy this part of our hobby, please come out and fly with us.  The next indoor flying date is in January.  We are also set to go back to twice a month for the winter months, so in January, February and March, we will do indoor flying on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month.  Hope to see you there.

AUCTION – Several planes were brought to auction and many deals were had.  All proceeds went to the club.

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen – 19 items were available for raffle at the meeting in addition to the quarterly prize.  The quarterly prize is a Horizon P47-D Thunderbolt complete with electric retracts.

PROGRAM – Christmas Party

November 2015 Minutes

 

The November meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on November 19, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:00pm

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – None

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – None

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – The first annual Wings over Windsong event was a great success.  The AMA recognized our club for all of the work and effort many of our members contributed to its success.  They are planning on doing it again next year and plans are already underway.  More details will follow in 2016.

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – We completed the rules reading last month so there is nothing else to report.  

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – The monthly financial report was presented and approved by the membership.  It is renewal time so payments can be processed online or checks can be mailed in or hand delivered.

SAFETY – Dave Schafer – If you see someone doing something that isn’t safe, say something or let an office know.  Our hobby is under intense scrutiny right now and we want to make sure we continue the amazing safety record we have.  

FIELD – Dave Schafer – Field is in great shape.  Thanks to all members that have been helping with the field.  No damage was caused by the recent storms.  We have also winterized all of our equipment and put it up for the year.

We are also implementing a change in frequency control that will coincide with the change in membership cards at the field.  Since all pilots are now required to wear their membership cards, they will not be able to put them in the frequency slots on the wall.  Fortunately most of our members fly on 2.4Ghz so we will be removing the frequency board and going forward, we will request that all pilots flying on 72Mhz and 50Mhz, coordinate amongst themselves for frequency control.

Youth Day – We had a great turnout with both the Scouts and their parents and siblings all getting a chance to fly.  The scouts had a great time and send their thanks.  We want to thank all of the members that helped with the event.

Wings over Windsong – What a great event.  We had about 44 registered pilots and almost 1000 spectators at the event.  The NFL Sunday Night Football bus was there as was the AMA Learn to Fly trailer.  We had some amazing noon demo flights.  The only downside was the weather but in the end, everyone had a great time.

NEW BUSINESS – 

Rules Review – Several rule changes were presented and approved

Taxi Rules - Turbine powered aircraft are now required to follow all taxi restrictions.  Taxing is prohibited between the pits and the flight line for all aircraft including turbines.

Trailer - The trailer that has been parked next to the storage containers is not being used and we have decided to sell it.  The request to sell was approved and a tentative buyer has already been located.

Events for 2016 – The formal dates for events in 2016 was discussed and approved.  Events will be posted to the website and distributed to all members.  2016 events include an aerotow day, 2 float flys, 2 youth days, Warbirds over Texas 2016, a member appreciation day and a community fun fly.  Other events may be added as the year progresses.

Drone Racing – A drone racing group asked our club if we would be interested in hosting a racing event at our field.  After a short discussion among those members present, it was decided that we would not be interested in hosting this event.

Officer Nominations – Per our club by-laws, officer nominations for the next year are to be made in November.  As such the board has asked and the following individuals have accepted the nominations for the following positions.

The club will electronically distribute ballots and proxies that all members can use to vote.  You are also entitled to vote in person.  Final voting will take place at the December club meeting.

SHOW and TELL – Art Wagner brought his new pattern plane to show the painting job and shared his experience with the Blue Scotch Painters tape.

Mike Farchie – Brought his Cyber Quad, a fully ducted multi rotor with an infra red camera.  He shared many of the features and capabilities of the quad system.

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen – This month’s raffle was sponsored by RC Hobbies in Richardson, TX.  Please make sure you stop by and thank them for their support.  We also had items donated by the widow of Sid Hussain.  23 items were available for raffle at the meeting 

The quarterly prize is a Horizon P47-D Thunderbolt complete with electric retracts.  It will be given away at the December club meeting.

PROGRAM – Dave Schafer gave a great presentation on the build of his X2 rocket powered plane and showed videos of its flights.  Dave recently donated the plane to the Airforce Museum and it is now on display at Edwards Airforce Base.

The next meeting of the North Dallas RC Club will be at 7:00pm on December 17th, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.
