August 2015 Minutes

The August meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on August 20, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:00pm

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – None

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – None

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – Absent

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – The monthly financial report was presented and approved by the membership.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos – We have 4 new members in August

SAFETY – Dave Schaefer – Absent

FIELD – Bruce Lakatos – The field has suffered damage from the cows that got onto the field during the recent flooding.  As of now the electric fence has been fully repaired and the cows are now staying off the field.  Repairs are underway and several truckloads of dirt have been purchased to begin filling the holes created by the cows.  The grass runway is usable but caution is recommended until we can get the runway rolled.  Also, use caution in the infield portion of the field as many holes are still there that have not been filled yet.

The runway is also in need of sealing again.  It has been several years since we last did it and the flooding ate away at the previous sealing which was already at the end of its life.  A quotation has been received from a professional company, the owner of which is an avid RC modeler.  The required work and the costs associated were discussed and the membership approved the quote so work can be completed before Warbirds in September.  The field will need to be closed for about 24 hours when this work is done and a notice will be sent out so everyone is aware.

The club has owned and maintained two vending machines.  Unfortunately the cost to maintain these machines has become cost prohibitive as both machines have died.  As such, we are removing them, selling the parts where possible and disposing of the rest.  Members will need to bring drinks to the field.  We do have a water cooler still at the field if you would like to use it.

The club would like to thank Art Wagner for all the work on the fence.  It is in top notch working order and it is doing its job keeping the animals out of the field.

There is a particular bull that likes to hang out by our entrance gate on the south side of the field.  Make sure that when you approach and open the gate, that the bull is not nearby.  If it is, make sure you get it away from the gate before you open it as the bull thinks our grass is greener and likes to come onto the field.

SOUND – Billy Slater – Absent

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – Training is continuing with the nice weather.  If you are interested in becoming an instructor, or if you are new to the hobby and would like training, please speak to Dale.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski – Absent

FACEBOOK – Josh Kleen – Nothing to report.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs –

Indoor Flying – Indoor flying continues to be fun.  Next Thursday and the 2nd Thursday of Sept.  Not 4th.

Fall Float Fly – The fall float fly is scheduled for September 12th.  It will be at Hidden Cove Park.  The park has confirmed that we will be able to fly.  The lake has dropped enough and the marina will be open.  We will be giving away a few Hobby King Skippers and we will have a few other prizes thanks to Roy’s Hobby Shop.

Member Day – Our spring family day was cancelled because of the flooding.  We have moved all of the events and activities to our Fall Member day on September 19th.  We are going to open this up to the community for helping us out while our field was closed and allowing the use of their facilities for flying.  More details will be made available as we get closer to the event.

Warbirds Over Texas 2015 – With the flooding, we have been forced to reschedule Warbirds.  As such, it has been rescheduled to September 25th and 26th.  If you have not signed up as a volunteer and would like to help out, please contact Charles Shafer.  Volunteers will have plenty of time to fly so don’t hesitate.  It is a lot of fun.

OLD BUSINESS –

Earlier this year, the club approved the creation of a new board level position of Membership Coordinator beginning with the 2016 year.   With this change, the Webmaster board position will become an appointed position so we continue to have 6 board positions.  (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Field Coordinator, Membership Coordinator)  This brings our board structure in line with the AMA recommendations.  To do this, we need to make some minor changes to the By Laws that govern our club.  Proper notice of this change was provided as required by the club by-laws and the change was brought to a vote of the members present.  The change was unanimously approved.

NEW BUSINESS –

The AMA is changing the way memberships are processed.  Starting September 15th, new members to the AMA will have an expiration date 12 calendar months after they join.  Traditionally memberships expired December 31st.  This adds a significant amount of work for all AMA clubs because of the monthly tracking that must now be done to validate AMA memberships.  The club agreed and it was recommended that we send a letter to our regional VP expressing our concerns.

Windsong Ranch is doing a fly in on November 7th and it is open to all AMA pilots.  NDRCC along with RRCC are supporting this event with pilots and volunteers.  If you are interested in flying or helping out, see any board member.

Anthony Cuington – Presented information on a special screening of The Bob Hoover Project.  Details will be sent out as they become available.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:55pm

SHOW and TELL –

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen – This month’s raffle was sponsored by Hobbytown USA in Lewisville, TX.  Please make sure you stop by and thank them for their support.  16 items were available for raffle at the meeting.

The new quarterly prize is a GoPro Hero 4 Silver.  It will be given away at the Member Day on September 19th.

Fall Float Fly – The fall float fly is scheduled for September 12th.  It will be at Hidden Cove Park.

OLD BUSINESS –

Don Hafer reported that Billy Slater prepared and submitted all of the documentation regarding our recent flooding and the clean-up efforts to the AMA Disaster Relief Fund.  He did an amazing job in laying out the damages and the work we have done to fix the field up, including lots of pictures and facts about the flood event itself.  The AMA has approved our request for relief and we have received payment to reimburse all of the costs the AMA covers as part of their Relief Fund.

Ken Sienski has been working with Denton County for a long time to reduce the property tax burden the club faces each year on the land we lease and the improvements we own.  Last year, we were able to get the taxes on the land reduced significantly by showing our land is almost fully in flood plain.  This has been reinforced this year and we have made sure to fully document the damage caused by the flooding should these questions arise again.  Additionally, he has now successfully petitioned the county to recognize our status as a non-profit tax exempt entity and we have been fully relieved of our property tax burden on the improvements at our field.  This is a permanent solution that allows us to eliminate our tax bill on the improvements completely and reinvest that money into our field.  If you see Ken, make sure you thank him for his tireless efforts.  These two efforts combined will be a significant annual savings for our club for years to come.  Thank you Ken!!!

NEW BUSINESS –

Don Hafer shared that the AMA National Model Aviation Day is scheduled for August 15th.  Many of the area clubs have events planned but we have elected not to participate this year.  Should someone wish to facilitate these events, please let the board know.

To change the By Laws, we are required to give a minimum of a 3 day notice that a vote on changing the By Laws will be happening.  The vote will be happening at that next monthly club meeting, scheduled for August 20th.  Additional notices will be sent out to the membership as we get closer to the meeting.

Dale O’Daniel shared that he received a request from a friend of his to attend an airshow in Gainsville on October 31st and perform an RC Aircraft show for the audience.  We are currently looking into what is required to do this.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Dale.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:49pm

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – Offered a big thank you to the Richardson RC Club, Heart of Texas Miniature Aircraft Club and the Texoma RC Club for allowing us to utilize their facilities while our field is underwater from the historic flooding of Lake Lewisville.

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.

TREASURER/MEMBERSHIP – Charlie Pyne – Absent.  Charles Shafer presented the current financials for the last two months.  Both reports were approved as presented.

SAFETY – Dave Schaefer – Absent

FIELD – Dave Schaefer – Absent

SOUND – Billy Slater – All is quite

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakots – We are now over 200 members.

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – No training has been occurring due to the flooding at our field.  It should pick up once we are flyable again.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski – The website has been updated to reflect the new Warbirds dates.  Registration is still open.

FACEBOOK – Josh Kleen – If you haven’t “liked” us yet, make sure you do so.  It is becoming a very useful tool for distributing information to our broader community.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs –

The Spring Float Fly went really well.  Conditions were great and everyone had a great time.

Indoor Flying – We have had to cancel the last few due to scheduling conflicts.  However, construction is now complete and the gym is in great shape.  It is scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month from 6:30 to 8:30.

Fall Float Fly – The fall float fly is scheduled for September 12th.  It will be at Hidden Cove Park.

Warbirds Over Texas 2015 – With the flooding, we have been forced to reschedule Warbirds.  As such, it has been rescheduled to September 25th and 26th.

OLD BUSINESS –

Had to cancel member’s day due to flooding.  All of the activities we had planned for this event, including the memorial stone presentation for John Reed, will be done during the Fall Family day on Sept 19th.

Don’t forget that we are a member of the Tom Thumb rewards program.  If you shop at Tom Thumb, you can register your rewards card as wanting to support NDRCC.  We then get a small percentage of your shopping total as a donation to our club.

NEW BUSINESS –

Our landlord now requires us to lock the Brewer Rood gate when our field is not in use.  The first person in needs to lock the gate and relock the lock so it isn’t stolen during the day.  The last person out at the end of the day then needs to relock the chain and lock when they leave.  The combination is the same as the gate on our entrance gate to the field.

We have reached out to the AMA to begin the process of applying for AMA Disaster Relief funding.  This will help cover some of the costs related to the repair of our field after the recent flooding.  We should know more in the coming weeks.

We need to purchase more gravel for the entry road, the parking lot and the area around the storage containers.  A motion was made for the approval of up to 8 loads of gravel.  The request was approved unanimously.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:26

SHOW and TELL –

Dale – Eflite Night Visionair

Kevin – Tac Hobby Cobra

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen - The quarterly prize of a Spektrum DX9 was won at the meeting by Jaques. Congratulations!!!!!

April 2015 Minutes

The April meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on April 16, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:03

It was announced that John Reed passed today.  He was a long time active member and he will be missed.  A moment of silence was held in his honor.  Once we receive information on services, we will pass them along.

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – None

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – None

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – None

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – The monthly report was presented and approved.  Warbirds preregistration payments are now being accepted through Paypal.  The results of the Q1 audit were presented and they showed everything is proper order.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos – No new members to report.

SAFETY – Dave Schaefer – Remember there are 4 pilot stations.  That means that only 4 planes can be flown at a time.  Club safety rules do allow for 5 planes to fly but all pilots must then have safety spotters and each pilot must remain in one of the 4 designated pilot boxes.

If you are going to hand launch an aircraft, make sure it is launched downwind of all pilot boxes.  This is to keep all pilots safe during the launch.

FIELD – Dave Schaefer – The electric fence has been completely overhauled and is working much better now.  We will be adding a 3rd wire to the fence to help with conductivity.  If you notice a problem with the fence or need to repair a break, please let our field team know.  An email or phone call would be great.  It has shown to be effective against the hogs and we want to keep them out of our field.

With spring here we are mowing more frequently.  This is done on a weekday morning and the field will be closed during mowing operations to keep everyone safe.  We want to also extend a special thanks to the field maintenance team!!!!  With all the rain, the field is really looking great.

SOUND – Billy Slater – All is quite

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – Training is ongoing but the student load is light.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski – Warbirds registration is open.  Feel free to submit any content you would like to see on the site.

FACEBOOK – Josh Kleen – For those that follow us on Facebook, remember to interact with the posts we make by either liking them or commenting.  This lets Facebook know you like what you see and will deliver more of our content to you.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs –

Upcoming Events -

Indoor flying is scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month and it continues to be lots of fun.  The gym construction is almost complete and the basketball hoops can now be raised during indoor flying.  There have been a number of pilots at the recent events and fun is had by all.  Remember that there is a 24” wingspan limit and the plane must weigh less than 5 ounces in order to fly.  Helicopters and multirotors are also allowed.

The spring float fly is scheduled to be April 25th at Hidden Cover Park on Lake Lewisville.  More details will be distributed when we get closer to the event date.

Member Appreciation Day is scheduled for Saturday May 30th at Eagle field.  Bring the whole family out for a great day of family, friends, food and of course flying!!!!

Warbirds over Texas 2015 is scheduled for Friday, June 12th and Saturday, June 13th.  Planning is already well underway but there is still much to accomplish.  If you are interested in volunteering for either setup on Tuesday, June 9th or for either of the event days, please contact Charles Shafer to sign up.

Recent Event Reports

Our spring youth day was Saturday, April 11th.  We had a number of kids from the Valley View Christian Church outreach program attend.  A short ground school was presented and then each youth got a turn on the simulator.  Once they were done with the sims, they each got at least 2 turns flying a real RC airplane.  A great lunch was served by Dr. Bruce while several pilots gave demonstration flights from different aspects of the hobby.  Fun was certainly had by all.  We would like to extend a special thank you to all of the volunteers that made this event possible.  Our Fall Youth Day is scheduled for October 17th.

OLD BUSINESS –

Charles Shafer presented different fencing options that we could use to control the wild hogs invading the field.  The hog proof fence proved to be the guaranteed option but it is also the most expensive.  It was agreed that we would wait and see how the upgraded electric fence worked and then proceed from there.

Registered Agent – With John Reed’s passing, the club needs a new registered agent.  Ken Sienski has volunteered to be our new registered agent with the State of Texas.

If electrical fence is damaged, please let Dave Schaefer know.  Art Wagner has shown several people how to check the fence.  You can also look at the indicator lights mounted by the electrical panel.

Brewer Rd gate – Different options for installing an automated gate opener were presented for the Brewer Rd main gate.  Each option presented different deficiencies and each were considered unacceptable.  It was decided that the gate would not be automated at this time.

Charles Shafer has located a sod roller that we can purchase for our field.  He will be picking it up tomorrow.

NEW BUSINESS –

No new business was presented.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:48

SHOW and TELL –

Ed Kettler – Dauntless

Josh Kleen – Composite ARF Ultra Flash

AUCTION – Various items were donated to the club and were auctioned off by Don Hafer.  Proceeds went to NDRCC.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – None

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – None

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – 2 new members joined in February.  A report was provided about the current financial state of the club and the report was approved by the membership.

A report was also presented related to the property taxes on the club owned improvements.  The club is working to get our taxes waived due to our charitable tax status but we must pay them and then be refunded after the tax district makes their decision.

A recommendation was also made to raise the coverage of our dishonesty bond.  The associated costs and benefits were presented and the motion was passed unanimously.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos – It was reported that we currently have 170 active members.

SAFETY – Dave Schaefer – New safety rules are in effect as approved last month and rules have been posted to the board at the field.

FIELD – Dave Schaefer – Field is in good shape with the exception of an area that was damaged due to a feral hog problem.

SOUND – Billy Slater – No sound problems

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – Training is picking up with the nicer weather.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski - Absent

FACEBOOK – Josh Kleen – If you haven’t joined our Facebook page yet, what are you waiting for?  We use it to announce important club information and dates as they are coming up.  It is also a great place to share your activities with the club.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs –

Aero tow was last Monday and was a successful event.  11 pilots and about 15 spectators attended.

Indoor flying continues to be lots of fun.  The gym is under construction and we will continue to monitor the situation but we expect to be able to continue to fly the 2nd and 4th Thursdays.  Charles will send an email out by Wednesday night if there is a need to cancel.

The spring float fly is scheduled to be April 25th at Hidden Cover Park on Lake Lewisville.  More details will be distributed when we get closer to the event date.

Our spring youth day is scheduled for Saturday, April 11th from 10:00am to 2:00pm.  During this time the field will be closed to normal operations.  Bruce will be cooking a great lunch and we will have the trainers and simulators out for the kids to experience our hobby.  We will also have several noon time demos to show different aspects of our hobby.  If you are interested in helping out with this event, please contact Charles Shafer.

Member Appreciation Day was originally scheduled for May 23rd.  As it turns out, this event conflicts with other activities going on in the area, as well as it being the Saturday of Memorial weekend.  We are proposing moving this event to May 30th to allow members to attend other area events and to let members attend that might be gone for Memorial Day.  This motion was submitted and unanimously approved.

OLD BUSINESS – None

NEW BUSINESS –

A proposal was made to fund the purchase of hats for Warbirds over Texas 2015.  These hats will be given to the pilots as part of their registration fee and will be available for sale.  This was approved unanimously.

A proposal was made to fund the purchase of the raffle grand prize for Warbirds over Texas 2015.  We are activity seeking sponsors to cover this cost so we may not need to use it but this will allow us to fund the grand prize should a sponsor not cover the cost completely.  This was approved unanimously.

Feral Hogs – The land we lease has become home to a group of feral hogs.  Recently they caused some significant damage to the southeast side of our field and to the electric fence that will need to be repaired.  Several options were presented as possible ways to deal with these hogs including new more robust fencing, trapping and hunting.  No decisions were made but the club will put together additional information and pricing for each of the proposed options, including just repairing damage when it happens.  Whatever we decide to do, we will also need to get approval from the landlord.

Brewer Road Gate – A question was raised about the feasibility of powering the main gate at Brewer Rd.  The biggest problem will be getting electricity to it and controlling access for both members and guests.  Billy Slater volunteered to research the feasibility of making this an automatic gate and will present it at the April meeting.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:45

SHOW and TELL – Reid – BF109 Parkzone

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen – There were 15 items available in the monthly raffle.  This month we are also gave away the quarterly prize.  The quarterly prize of a new E-flite P-51D Mustang (EFL6750), complete with retracts and flaps was given away at the meeting to Ken Sienski.
