April 2015 Minutes

The April meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on April 16, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:03

It was announced that John Reed passed today.  He was a long time active member and he will be missed.  A moment of silence was held in his honor.  Once we receive information on services, we will pass them along.

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – None

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – None

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – None

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – The monthly report was presented and approved.  Warbirds preregistration payments are now being accepted through Paypal.  The results of the Q1 audit were presented and they showed everything is proper order.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos – No new members to report.

SAFETY – Dave Schaefer – Remember there are 4 pilot stations.  That means that only 4 planes can be flown at a time.  Club safety rules do allow for 5 planes to fly but all pilots must then have safety spotters and each pilot must remain in one of the 4 designated pilot boxes.

If you are going to hand launch an aircraft, make sure it is launched downwind of all pilot boxes.  This is to keep all pilots safe during the launch.

FIELD – Dave Schaefer – The electric fence has been completely overhauled and is working much better now.  We will be adding a 3rd wire to the fence to help with conductivity.  If you notice a problem with the fence or need to repair a break, please let our field team know.  An email or phone call would be great.  It has shown to be effective against the hogs and we want to keep them out of our field.

With spring here we are mowing more frequently.  This is done on a weekday morning and the field will be closed during mowing operations to keep everyone safe.  We want to also extend a special thanks to the field maintenance team!!!!  With all the rain, the field is really looking great.

SOUND – Billy Slater – All is quite

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – Training is ongoing but the student load is light.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski – Warbirds registration is open.  Feel free to submit any content you would like to see on the site.

FACEBOOK – Josh Kleen – For those that follow us on Facebook, remember to interact with the posts we make by either liking them or commenting.  This lets Facebook know you like what you see and will deliver more of our content to you.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs –

Upcoming Events -

Indoor flying is scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month and it continues to be lots of fun.  The gym construction is almost complete and the basketball hoops can now be raised during indoor flying.  There have been a number of pilots at the recent events and fun is had by all.  Remember that there is a 24” wingspan limit and the plane must weigh less than 5 ounces in order to fly.  Helicopters and multirotors are also allowed.

The spring float fly is scheduled to be April 25th at Hidden Cover Park on Lake Lewisville.  More details will be distributed when we get closer to the event date.

Member Appreciation Day is scheduled for Saturday May 30th at Eagle field.  Bring the whole family out for a great day of family, friends, food and of course flying!!!!

Warbirds over Texas 2015 is scheduled for Friday, June 12th and Saturday, June 13th.  Planning is already well underway but there is still much to accomplish.  If you are interested in volunteering for either setup on Tuesday, June 9th or for either of the event days, please contact Charles Shafer to sign up.

Recent Event Reports

Our spring youth day was Saturday, April 11th.  We had a number of kids from the Valley View Christian Church outreach program attend.  A short ground school was presented and then each youth got a turn on the simulator.  Once they were done with the sims, they each got at least 2 turns flying a real RC airplane.  A great lunch was served by Dr. Bruce while several pilots gave demonstration flights from different aspects of the hobby.  Fun was certainly had by all.  We would like to extend a special thank you to all of the volunteers that made this event possible.  Our Fall Youth Day is scheduled for October 17th.

OLD BUSINESS –

Charles Shafer presented different fencing options that we could use to control the wild hogs invading the field.  The hog proof fence proved to be the guaranteed option but it is also the most expensive.  It was agreed that we would wait and see how the upgraded electric fence worked and then proceed from there.

Registered Agent – With John Reed’s passing, the club needs a new registered agent.  Ken Sienski has volunteered to be our new registered agent with the State of Texas.

If electrical fence is damaged, please let Dave Schaefer know.  Art Wagner has shown several people how to check the fence.  You can also look at the indicator lights mounted by the electrical panel.

Brewer Rd gate – Different options for installing an automated gate opener were presented for the Brewer Rd main gate.  Each option presented different deficiencies and each were considered unacceptable.  It was decided that the gate would not be automated at this time.

Charles Shafer has located a sod roller that we can purchase for our field.  He will be picking it up tomorrow.

NEW BUSINESS –

No new business was presented.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:48

SHOW and TELL –

Ed Kettler – Dauntless

Josh Kleen – Composite ARF Ultra Flash

AUCTION – Various items were donated to the club and were auctioned off by Don Hafer.  Proceeds went to NDRCC.

PROGRAM – Warbirds over Texas 2015 discussion and planning.

The next meeting of the North Dallas RC Club will be at 11:00am on Saturday May 30, 2015 at Eagle Field.  The program will be our annual Member Appreciation Day.  See you there.

March 2015 Minutes

The March meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on March 19, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:05

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – None

PRESIDENT'S REPORT – Don Hafer – None

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – None

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.

TREASURER – Charlie Pyne – 2 new members joined in February.  A report was provided about the current financial state of the club and the report was approved by the membership.

A report was also presented related to the property taxes on the club owned improvements.  The club is working to get our taxes waived due to our charitable tax status but we must pay them and then be refunded after the tax district makes their decision.

A recommendation was also made to raise the coverage of our dishonesty bond.  The associated costs and benefits were presented and the motion was passed unanimously.

MEMBERSHIP – Bruce Lakatos – It was reported that we currently have 170 active members.

SAFETY – Dave Schaefer – New safety rules are in effect as approved last month and rules have been posted to the board at the field.

FIELD – Dave Schaefer – Field is in good shape with the exception of an area that was damaged due to a feral hog problem.

SOUND – Billy Slater – No sound problems

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – Training is picking up with the nicer weather.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski - Absent

FACEBOOK – Josh Kleen – If you haven’t joined our Facebook page yet, what are you waiting for?  We use it to announce important club information and dates as they are coming up.  It is also a great place to share your activities with the club.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs –

Aero tow was last Monday and was a successful event.  11 pilots and about 15 spectators attended.

Indoor flying continues to be lots of fun.  The gym is under construction and we will continue to monitor the situation but we expect to be able to continue to fly the 2nd and 4th Thursdays.  Charles will send an email out by Wednesday night if there is a need to cancel.

The spring float fly is scheduled to be April 25th at Hidden Cover Park on Lake Lewisville.  More details will be distributed when we get closer to the event date.

Our spring youth day is scheduled for Saturday, April 11th from 10:00am to 2:00pm.  During this time the field will be closed to normal operations.  Bruce will be cooking a great lunch and we will have the trainers and simulators out for the kids to experience our hobby.  We will also have several noon time demos to show different aspects of our hobby.  If you are interested in helping out with this event, please contact Charles Shafer.

Member Appreciation Day was originally scheduled for May 23rd.  As it turns out, this event conflicts with other activities going on in the area, as well as it being the Saturday of Memorial weekend.  We are proposing moving this event to May 30th to allow members to attend other area events and to let members attend that might be gone for Memorial Day.  This motion was submitted and unanimously approved.

OLD BUSINESS – None

NEW BUSINESS –

A proposal was made to fund the purchase of hats for Warbirds over Texas 2015.  These hats will be given to the pilots as part of their registration fee and will be available for sale.  This was approved unanimously.

A proposal was made to fund the purchase of the raffle grand prize for Warbirds over Texas 2015.  We are activity seeking sponsors to cover this cost so we may not need to use it but this will allow us to fund the grand prize should a sponsor not cover the cost completely.  This was approved unanimously.

Feral Hogs – The land we lease has become home to a group of feral hogs.  Recently they caused some significant damage to the southeast side of our field and to the electric fence that will need to be repaired.  Several options were presented as possible ways to deal with these hogs including new more robust fencing, trapping and hunting.  No decisions were made but the club will put together additional information and pricing for each of the proposed options, including just repairing damage when it happens.  Whatever we decide to do, we will also need to get approval from the landlord.

Brewer Road Gate – A question was raised about the feasibility of powering the main gate at Brewer Rd.  The biggest problem will be getting electricity to it and controlling access for both members and guests.  Billy Slater volunteered to research the feasibility of making this an automatic gate and will present it at the April meeting.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:45

SHOW and TELL – Reid – BF109 Parkzone

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen – There were 15 items available in the monthly raffle.  This month we are also gave away the quarterly prize.  The quarterly prize of a new E-flite P-51D Mustang (EFL6750), complete with retracts and flaps was given away at the meeting to Ken Sienski.

February 2015 Minutes

The February meeting of the North Dallas RC Club occurred on February 19, 2015 at Valley View Christian Church.  Club President Don Hafer called the meeting to order at 7:05

The minutes of the January 2015 club meeting were presented and unanimously approved as published on the club website.

VISITORS/NEW MEMBERS – Richard Hose - Visitor

PRESIDENT'S REPORT - Don Hafer – Nothing to Report.

VICE PRESIDENT – Charles Shafer – Our annual club swap meet is next month during the monthly club meeting.  Make sure you bring stuff to swap and money to buy as there will definitely be deals to be found.  Also, indoor flying has been fun this year and everyone is encouraged to attend.

SECRETARY – Josh Kleen – AMA safety rules and NDRCC club safety rules were read.  A list of local events was also shared.

TREASURER/MEMBERSHIP – Charlie Pyne – 3 new members joined last month.  We are on or ahead of budget for both income and expenses so far this year.  Our annual audit has been performed on our books and passed.  We have a club member that audits them internally every quarter and all club officers have access to financial information if any member has questions.

SAFETY - Dave Schaefer – Hovering of helicopters and multirotors is limited to designated areas as described in the club safety documentation.  Please review this information if you intend to operate a helicopter or multirotor in these areas.  Also 3D flying of helicopters can be done to the north west of the runway as long as you stay between the runway and the fence line.

There is an emergency kit on top of the first aid box should it be needed.

FIELD – Dave Schaefer – Field is in good shape.  There is an armadillo problem that we are working on and it is impacting the east side of the runway.  Use caution if you plan to utilize the grass runway or if you roll off either side of the runway as there are some holes where the armadillos have dug and you might catch a gear.

SOUND - Billy Slater – All is quite.  Enjoy the flying weather.

TRAINING – Dale O'Daniel – We have 3-4 people in training.  Progress is being made by several students when the weather permits.

WEBMASTER – Ken Sienski – Nothing new to report now.  Let us know if there is anything you would like to post.

FACEBOOK - Josh Kleen – Feel free to share content with us as we would love to share it with the world.  If you post any YouTube videos or pictures, link them to us and we can share them.

CD REPORTS – John Grubbs – Indoor flying is the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month.

RAFFLE - Melissa Kleen – There were 15 items available in the raffle today.  All of the winners were very happy.

The quarterly prize, which will be given away at the March meeting, is the new E-flite P-51D Mustang (EFL6750), complete with retracts and flaps.

OLD BUSINESS –

Taxes – We are working on getting our tax bill reduced to save the club money.  We have engaged a lawyer to help with the process of filing for a tax exemption.  There is no cost to the club for this service unless we are successful in reducing our tax liability.  Then the cost is limited to 25% of the tax savings.  The membership agreed this was a good idea and voted to move forward.

Update to safety rules – We are recommending changes to the club safety rules to recognize multirotors and to apply all helicopter rules to a multirotor aircraft.  We are also recommending that we recognize the AMA’s rules for FPV flying and operating a sUAS for hobby or recreational use.  Commercial operation of any sUAS is prohibited without board approval.

Cell phone use for calls while at the flight like is prohibited.  Cell phone cameras are permitted.

Rockets are prohibited without prior permission from the board.

NEW BUSINESS –

Membership Coordinator - The board has recommended the creation of an officer level position for membership coordinator.  Bruce Lakatos has been appointed to this role by the board and the club membership has approved this appointment.  The expectation is that the membership coordinator will remain an officer level position for the remainder of 2015 and that it will be elevated to a board level position for 2016.  Actions to change the club bylaws will be undertaken as we get closer to the end of 2015.

Clarification on late fees on membership dues – Renewing club members that are not lifetime members are required to pay their dues by December 31st of the year prior to the membership year.  For 2015, dues were late if not paid by December 31, 2014.  The club bylaws allow for the assessment of late fees to members that have not paid their annual dues by the December 31st deadline.  There have been instances where members have left the club and after a number of years, rejoined the club but the late fee language was unclear about their status and if a late fee was due.  The board has proposed a clarification on this matter.

In the event that a renewing member has not been an active member for 2 or more consecutive membership years, the renewing member will be allowed to rejoin the club at any time without the requirement to pay a late fee.  Per existing club rules they will also not be required to repay the initiation fee.

This clarifying language was proposed and approved by the club membership.

CLOSE OF BUSINESS – The business portion of the meeting was closed by Don Hafer at 7:39

Josh Kleen – Josh brought his new JetCat P140 RXi that will be used to power his CARF Ultra Flash when it is completed.

PROGRAM – This month we had a wonderful presentation on FPV and multirotors from Andy Van Vooren, owner of Aero Hobbies in Lewisville, TX.  He brought several examples of FPV equipment as well as some great examples of common multirotors available today.  Stop by his shop in person or his site online at http://www.aerohobbies.com.

We are starting the year with 160 members.  This is the highest initial membership we have had in several years.  The membership approved both the final financial results of 2014 and the budget for 2015.

SAFETY - Dave Schaefer – Things have been safe.  As this is the first meeting of 2015, the safety rules need to be reapproved.  The membership unanimously approved the safety rules as they were last year.  Dave noted that should there ever need to be a change in the rules, we can change them at any time with the memberships approval per the by-laws of the club.
